Top 5 ways to design a healthy sports environment for your child

sports in india

Encouraging your children to be active in sports offers a number of benefits. For one, physical activity enhances a child’s health, both physically and emotionally. Physically active kids are also less likely to become obese or develop chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes later in life.

Moreover, exercise through sports helps relieve stress, alleviates anxiety, and reduces the chances of developing depression.

Playing sports also aids in the child’s social and psychological development. During their games, kids learn to make friends and work in a team. Furthermore, the activity improves their self-worth and self-esteem.

Immersing Your Child in the Ideal Sports Environment
There are many ways and places where kids can play sports. Kids can play sports at home, for their school, with other kids in the community, or at a local sports academy.

But getting your kids into sports is more than just getting them involved in after-school activities or signing up for your local sports team. You need to create a positive and healthy sports environment for your kids. Here are a few ways to help you do just that.

  1. Look for the right environment

    sports in school

Evidence shows that adults who live near parks or recreational areas are likelier to get involved in some form of physical activity, not just sports. The same goes for children and teenagers. This suggests that as long as safe sporting areas are located nearby residential areas, chances are, more young people will get involved in sports.

If such areas are not available, low-traffic streets are popular alternatives. Families can also use their yards to play a quick game of catch or football. In some communities, public spaces may be converted for use in sports. Spaces can be designed for a specific sport such as football, baseball or basketball or can be converted depending on the need.

In the case of schoolchildren, there is the school. Students can sign up for after-school activities, including sports. The type of sports offered can vary depending on the available facilities and equipment inside the school.

Some areas may also feature a sports academy. Kids can sign up to learn about a variety of sports programs from the best coaches in their chosen field. For the best experience, make sure to enroll in a sports academy with high-quality facilities, a robust sports program and a positive, active community of coaches, facilitators, students and parents.

  2. Make the most of indoor sports

    indoor sports infrastructure

Don’t forget the endless fun possibilities you and your kid can experience when playing indoor sports. Chess and other board games help sharpen your child’s strategic thinking skills and teach valuable life skills on patience and decision-making.

Meanwhile, more physical games such as ping-pong, table tennis, billiards and similar sports can be played in a wide range of indoor venues, from your common hall or community center to clubs to your basement.

Moreover, indoor sports can be played regardless of the weather conditions, making them easy to practice and enjoy all year round.

  3. Find the right coach

    sports coaching

Coaches play an integral role in how children develop their skills in sports. They also influence the way kids see sports. Studies indicate that one of the most common causes for kids to quit is a bad relationship with their coach. To find the best sports coaches, you need to go beyond their athletic skills and achievements.

Good coaches follow an athlete-centered curriculum. With this type of curriculum, coaches put their focus and attention on the needs of the kids. A coach who applies this type of training knows how to listen to the players and train the entire team instead of simply focusing attention on the gifted individuals. Good coaches will try to consider each individual player’s needs. They will work with each player to help everyone in the team understand, learn and succeed.

As the adults, coaches become the role models. Kids are likely to imitate and emulate the coach’s behavior. It is important to look at how the coach behaves with the opposing team, their players, the officials and even spectators.

To create a healthy and positive sports environment, it is also important to look for coaches who are not just focused on winning. The coach’s emphasis should be encouraging kids to try their best while having fun at the same time.

  4. Be a supportive parent

    parents support for kids sports

It is not enough to look for the right sporting area or getting your kids trained under a renowned coach. Parents also have a part to play in creating a positive sporting environment for their kids. Whether your little ones play individual sports or in a team, there are ways you can train your kids to become better in sports and as individuals.

Your behavior on and off the field can influence how your children will see the sport and behave towards other people. To show your support to your young ones, here are some helpful tips:

    • Cheer and acknowledge good plays made during the game, whether it is by your child’s team or the opponents.
    • Accept decisions made by the referees or officials during the game. Even if their decisions may seem unfair, keep in mind that they can also make mistakes.
    • Never harass other people (mainly your children’s opponents) or use bad language.
    • Be supportive but do not force your kids to take up sports or win. Parents can unwittingly put pressure on their children if they insist that the kids participate in sporting events. The same can be said when placing too much emphasis on winning.
  5. Additional Tips to Ensure Your Child’s Safety

Regardless of the place or the type of sporting facility available in your local area, there are some key aspects that you need to look out for. When choosing a safe sporting environment or creating one from scratch, ensure the following:

    • Sports equipment and the area are in good condition. Make sure that there are no sharp corners or uneven areas.
    • Your child is playing a sport or signing up for a course that is suited for the child’s age, size and ability.
    • Kids are not exposed to extreme environmental or weather conditions, such as staying under the hot sun or swimming in frigid waters.
    • The clothes your kids should be designed for the sport and suited for the local weather conditions.

Closing Thoughts

Creating a safe and healthy sporting environment involves more than just finding a spot where your kids can play. The adults need to do their part as well. You may encourage your kids to participate but not to the point of forcing them to play. The goal is to make sports a fun way for your kids to stay physically active, learn new skills and make new friends along the way.
