With the sudden surge of health loss programs and the constant pressure to look thin, many people are also opting for a gluten free diet. Gluten is considered bad because of gluten sensitivity and also because it makes you addictive to certain kinds of foods. Here’s more about this approach to weight loss.

What is a Gluten Free Diet
A gluten free diet is said to help in loosing weight. Gluten is a protein commonly found in food items such as wheat, rye, barley, pasta etc. Not only is this diet helpful for weight loss but it also helps people suffering from celiac disease which tends to affect the digestive system of an individual.

With the growing demand of gluten free food items, there are more alternatives available in the market to meet this demand. There is an increasing demand for junk food items too which are gluten free. So, you will now find Biscuits, bagels, pasta, sandwiches etc. that are gluten free, are easily available in the market.

Benefits of gluten free diet
Some of the benefits of having a gluten free diet are:

  • Reduces the chances of heart ailments
  • Reduces the possibility of cancer cells
  • Helps people suffering from gastric illnesses
  • It apparently boosts energy
  • Your body will receive more carbs and vitamins
  • Helps boost metabolism

Disadvantages of gluten free diet

  • A total gluten free diet can cause harm to people suffering from celiac disease (the most severe form of gluten sensitivity) by effecting the small intestinal tract.
  • Could cause stomach pain, uneasiness, acid indigestion, loose bowels etc.
  • A gluten free diet program could cause deficiency of fiber, iron and other nutrients that are necessary for the body.
  • It lowers the intake of carbohydrates due to reduced nutrients.
  • You may end up piling on weight due to complimentary gluten foods that are full of fat and sugar.

    Embarking on a a gluten free diet
    Gluten free products are great for weight loss, however it has its shares of advantages and disadvantages, so make sure you read them carefully before starting on a diet. Also, there are some food items that are naturally gluten free, healthy and tasty at the same time.

    Items such as fresh eggs, meat, fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, fowl, milk products etc. are all good gluten free items that you can have. Similarly in grains, you can try buckwheat, amaranth, Corn, soy, flax, tapioca, etc are some of the grains that are gluten free. You can buy gluten free products from the market, however, do read the labels carefully before buying them.
