Which is the fitness capital (fittest city) of India?

fitness industry India

A more recent report suggests that Gurugram (Gurgaon), Noida and Ghaziabad are the most fitness conscious cities in India, with people working out at least 10 days a month. On the other hand, Kolkata, Lucknow and Ahmedabad are the laziest cities, where people work out less than four days a month on an average. While the women in Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Lucknow are almost as active as the rest of the country, it is the men who pull these cities down.

With regard to the pattern of exercise, while men prefer more intense workouts that burn more calories such as push-ups and bicycling, women opt for more passive workouts such as yoga and more specifically surya namaskar. In general, people from metro cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, among others, are a lot more active than the rest of the country. People in non-metros perform low intensity workouts such as walking while the metro citizens prefer intense workouts such as running, swimming and push-ups.

Mumbai has always been considered the business capital of the country, and also hosts the biggest film industry in India, but is it also the Fitness capital of India? Let’s find out.

For several years, fitness & sports has been popular only with a small segment of the overall population in India. Its only in the last few years things have changed.

In terms of sporting facilities, places like Delhi have always had an upper-hand because of the abundance of stadiums & open parks, the fact that several military establishments are in the vicinity has also helped Delhi.

But when it comes to fitness, cities like Mumbai & Bangalore seem to be taking the lead. Today international fitness chains are eager to establish a foothold in India, with an eye on the big opportunity that awaits in this segment. Many are already operational in cities such as Mumbai & Bangalore.

In another survey that covered the top 8 Indian cities, Pune scored the highest fitness score, followed by Chandigarh. It seems most Indians spend over four hours a week on their fitness. Last year Chandigarh was labelled the diabetes capital of India, but this year the Chandigarh youth seem to have become more health conscious. The ‘Fit India Survey’ was conducted by Reebok. However, the study only surveyed around 1500 people, which is very low (we feel) to make any conclusions. Read more here.

Bangalore may be a city of foodies, but it’s also got its fair share of fitness fanatics. So it wasn’t a surprise when several health-conscious people from the city’s swish set turned up at the ITC Windsor to listen to health expert Justin Tamsett speak about the importance of making time for fitness.

But then, there are a couple of factors working in Mumbai’s favor.

Is Mumbai the Fitness Capital of India?

The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has also helped Mumbai’s reputation as a fitness city, with thousands participating every year.

Another factor in Mumbai’s favor is the presence of Bollywood, which means the youth in this city are more conscious about their looks; and with several opportunities available they have to be in good shape.

So as of now, it seems that besides being the financial capital of the country, Mumbai can also claim to be the ‘Fitness Capital’ of the country.
