In the past decade, India’s fitness scene has evolved from conventional gyms and yoga classes to high-intensity, competition-style training formats such as CrossFit, Ironman, HYROX.
What do CrossFit, Ironman, and HYROX have in common?
They’ve turned fitness into sports where participants compete in races for records.
And it seems more Indians are loving such sports.
Here we take a look at the various Extreme Fitness events where performance training meets sporting culture,
HYROX: The More Recent Entrant
HYROX is a global fitness racing event that combines running with functional fitness exercises that test both speed and strength. Originating in Germany, HYROX is a more recent entrant in India.
The competition consists of eight 1km runs and eight different workouts such as SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.
HYROX is inclusive and open to participants of various fitness levels, as there are different divisions and race formats based on fitness levels.
HYROX offers structure and has a less intimidating entry point (compared to triathlons or CrossFit).
“We want to make HYROX the biggest endurance fitness event in India.” – Deepak Raj, Country Head of HYROX India.
Sports brand PUMA is the official apparel and footwear partner for all HYROX races worldwide (from 2024 to 2027). In India, Puma provides support to the HYROX team for building the sport in the country, and has also developed a full range of HYROX apparel and footwear.
CrossFit in India
Once a cult-like craze, CrossFit (includes short and intensive workouts) took Indian metros by storm around 2015–2020.
For a few years, CrossFit boxes popped up in urban cities. But licensing fees, coaching gaps, challenge of sustaining long-term members, led to rebranding of “CrossFit” as “functional fitness”.
Ironman & Triathlon: Ultimate Test of Endurance
Running 42.2 km itself is hard enough. Add to it 180 km of cycling and a 3.8 km swim. That’s the Ironman triathlon, the ultimate test of mental and physical stamina.
The Ironman India event in Goa brought this global franchise to Indian shores. Not just elite athletes, but many business execs and endurance enthusiasts also signed up as the event has become a symbol of status and self-mastery.
With more Indians training for international Ironman races, triathlon coaching, gear, and nutrition ecosystems are quietly thriving.
Spartan and Obstacle Course Races
Obstacle course races (OCRs) like Spartan, Devil’s Circuit and Tough Mudder were once quite popular in India. However, COVID put a brake on their momentum.
Although not as prominent today, the challenges of these events continue to inspire homegrown events and gym circuits.
Business & Brands Behind the Movement
Extreme fitness is no longer just a lifestyle — it’s a monetizable niche.
These events present booming business opportunities. From performance gear and supplements to coaching apps and gym franchises, more brands are cashing in on the culture of extreme fitness.
- Gear & Apparel: Athleisure brands are tailoring gear for performance athletes.
- Nutrition: Supplement brands are launching Ironman-ready energy gels and CrossFit-style pre-workouts.
- Gyms & Franchises: Premium training facilities now include HYROX-style circuits and CrossFit rigs.
- Influencers: Competitive athletes are gaining traction as niche creators, creating monetization models beyond aesthetics.
