cooking tips

Sushi is not just topping the exotic food chart in India, but also when it comes to learning it. It is one dish that is also popular with vegetarians, so even they would like to learn to make it.

Sushi is a popular Japanese dish prepared with raw veggies, and is full of nutrition. Serve with soya sauce as a dip. There are many who also give an Indian touch to this Japanese dish.

“Sushi is definitely the most popular workshop in most metro Indian cities, including Mumbai. I guess because making sushi is an art, which cannot be learnt from cookery books. It has unique ingredients, is expensive and requires special skill sets. it is also pretty to look at”.

Basic Sushi

Making sushi doesn’t have to be complicated, just because its Japanese. As with any other dish, you need a bit of practice. These basic sushi rolls can be filled with any ingredients you like – smoked salmon, crab meat, chicken, tuna – and the list goes on! Serve with soy sauce and wasabi.

  • Gunkan : Small cups of sushi rice and dried seaweed, filled with seafood, which may include sea urchin and fish eggs.
  • Norimaki : Sushi rice and fillings rolled in dried seaweed (nori) sheets. Fillings can include seafood, egg, vegetables etc. This is the most common type of sushi.
  • Temaki : Hand-rolled cones of nori, filled with sushi rice, seafood and other fillings.
  • Oshizushi : Pressed sushi.Inari – Sushi rice filled into deep fried tofu bags.
  • Chirashi : Seafood, mushrooms and veggies are spread over sushi rice.

Is Sushi Really Healthy?

Sushi is often thought of as a weight loss friendly meal, however not all preparations may be as beneficial as mentioned.

That’s because some sushi preparation may use high-fat sauces and fried batter, which can significantly increase the amount of calories you get.

Some sushi may use very little fish or vegetables, which makes it a low-protein, low-fiber meal thus reducing its nutritional value.

To make your next sushi meal more filling, try accompanying it with a miso soup, a side of edamame beans, a portion of sashimi or a wakame salad.
