Aspirants who wish to join the Indian army need to undergo a fitness test and medical examination held at the medical boards. Only the candidates who are declared fit by the medical authorities are eligible to join the Training Academy.
But please note that a candidate first needs to get through interviews and various other tests before they become eligible for the fitness tests/medicals.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
Candidates have to undergo the following tests as part of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT):
- 1.6 Km Run.
- Pull Ups.
- Balance.

Here’s how a candidate is assessed for these tests:
1.6 Km Run
- Up to 5 Mins 30 Secs -> 60 Marks
- From 5 Mins 31 Secs to 5 Mins to 45 Secs -> 48 Marks

In general:
- Candidates must be in good physical and mental health.
- There should be no evidence of weak body constitution or excess weight.
- Chest should be healthy, muscles of abdomen should be well developed.
- There should be no disease of bones and joints of the body.
- Needs to have good eyesight.
“There can be no doubt that army service requires the highest degree of physical fitness. There is substance in the contention of the respondents (the Centre and others) that the defect in the right index finger, which is the trigger finger, (congenital absence of middle and distal phalanx of right hand index finger) would adversely affect the ability of the petitioner to effectively use weapons,” High court rejecting the petition of the man who had challenged the order declaring him to be permanently unfit to serve in the army.
