Nutritionists recommend that one needs to eat a balanced diet in order to be fit and healthy, and one also needs to cut down on the amount of carbohydrates in the food.
There is a no doubt that the great Indian thali is a great option when it comes to satisfying your taste buds, but is it also good for health and fitness?
A typical Indian thali would consist of the following:
- Almost half of it is carbs (rice, chapati, and even some of the veggies)
- There is also a lot fat considering the amount of oil and ghee that they put; there’s also sweet dish served along with it.
- The protein constituent seems to be low when looked at as a percentage of the entire thing (it would be around 20%)
Looking at the percentage of protein, the thali may not appeal much to the fitness/health conscious people; although should be okay to have it once in a while. Having said that, the thali should be fine for a person with a smaller body frame, whose protein requirement may not be much.
Here’s what you can do to make the thali more healthy:
- Increase the amount of protein – add more of paneer, soy, chicken, mutton, fish (choose as per your preferences)
- Use less oil/fat for cooking that thali
- Instead of traditional sweets, opt for something like “Gajar ka Halwa”, Moong dal halwa, or Doodhi ka halwa.
